Workshop on Analyzing and understanding the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy and Identifying Intervention Process

 

A two-day workshop on National Fisheries Policy Analysis and
Identification of Intervention Process was held at the National Fisheries
Solidarity Movement Training Center in Negombo on September 9-10.

The objective of this workshop was to discuss analyze the various
chapters of the ‘National Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy in Sri Lanka and
educate the NAFSO staff on the implications of National policy to the small
scale fisheries sector in Sri Lanka. Further staff wanted to know how they
should intervene the National policy during the implementation of the policy.

The first session was district level presentations on the
‘Problems experience at district level fisheries communities. District staff
highlighted the difficulties experienced by the small scale fisher communties
at district level due to ongoing development projects in Sri Lanka such as
‘Port City’ Colombo, and the impact of such development projects to the
aquaculture sector. District staff emphasized the negative aspects of usage of
prohibited fishing gears in the marine and inland fishing.  

Mr. Pradeep Wanigasuriya, Manager Administration, NAFSO conducted
the second session on ‘The public policy formulation in Sri Lanka and the legal
aspects of National Policies’.

Mr.Herman Kumara, Convener of NAFSO presented the development of
‘Blue Economy’ concept, and it’s 
implications to the fisheries and aquaculture sector globally and in Sri
Lanka.

Finally, district staff presented their findings and views on
various chapters of the National Fisheries policy and areas that they want to
review in relation to the marine and the inland fisheries sectors.
