Northern Province Fisher
People’s Unity conducted its General Body Meeting on the 12th September at the
Yalpadi Restaurant in Jaffna.

discussed at the meeting.
1. Minutes of the previous
meeting
2. Current situation on
fisheries issues in the districts in the Northern Province
3. Current political situation
in Sri Lanka
4. Activities that could not be
done in the past
– Actions of the Fisheries Co-
Management platform
– Trawler fishing and Court case
– Actions on migration and
Illegal fishing
5. Expected future actions
– Meeting with Minister of
fisheries on migratory fishing, Social security, Destructive fishing and
development issues
– Awareness program on illegal
fishing and signature campaign against the illegal fishing.
– Field visit of representatives
of NPFPU (public meeting with fisher communities)
Several decisions were made at
the end of the meeting
1. Dialogue with Minister of
Fisheries end of September
2. Representatives of the NPFPU
and NAFSO will organize public meeting in district level with fisher
communities in Mannar, Mullaithevu, Kilinochchi and Jaffna.
3. District leaders collect
informations on Migration and illegal fishing and update the research report.
During the Meeting Mr. Herman
Kumara, National Convener of NAFSO addressed the audience on current political
and Economic situation in Sir Lanka. Mr. Anthony Jesudasan, Project Coordinator
provided inputs on future actions of NPFPU. Mrs. Lavina Hasanthi, Gender
program Coordinator of NAFSO, Ms. T. Datsha, Province Coordinator of Fisheries
sector and Districts Coordinators and staff from Mannar, Kilinochchi,
Mullaithevu and Jaffna districts attached to NAFSO gave technical support. Mr.
N. V. Subramaniyam, Chairperson of the NPFPU conducted the meeting, Mr. A.
Sankar, Secretary, Mr. Franzis Joseph, Vice chairperson, Mr. T. Anthony,
Tresseror, Mr. N. M. Alam, Mr. A. Annarasa, Bord members and Mrs. Anne Reeta
Vice Secretary of the NPFPU gave inputs to tack to good discussion. 41
