A Practical training on Disaster Risk Reduction
A
training program was organized by NAFSO for the youth members of the
organization on Disaster Risk Reduction from the 22nd – 24th of
August at The kings Bay hotel, Negombo. The purpose of the program was to
provide a practical exposure to the youth members. Sri Lanka Red Cross Society was
given the responsibility to conduct the program.

On the
first day Mr. Laksiri Fernando, Youth Coordinator, NAFSO presented the objectives
of the workshop, he highlighted that NAFSO is providing practical training for
youth members to get a practical knowledge on disaster mitigation and to encourage
youth members to develop disaster mitigation plans at village level.
A resource
person from Red Cross then conducted a session on “Identifying the expectations
of the participants and to provided them the basic principle of the Disaster
Mitigation”
On the
2nd day, the director of the Gampaha Red Cross branch facilitated
the session. The theme of the session was the ‘Role of the volunteers in
disaster mitigation’ He explained the role of the volunteers is crucial in a
disaster situation as the government assistance cannot reach the disaster situation
as and when they occur. He further explained various stagers of the disasters
using the disaster mitigation circle how volunteers could intervene to each and
every step and provide their services.
The 2nd session of the 2nd day was ‘Water safety’.
It was a practical training at the hotel pool, and the Red Cross instructors
demonstrated how the volunteers could save lives in a flood situation.
The 3rd
session of the 2nd day was how to provide first aid in an emergency
situation. A Red Cross resource person conducted this session with theory and
with some practical demonstrations. The 4th Session of the 2nd
day was a session on Non communicable diseases (NCD). A medical doctor from the
Negombo hospital conducted this session. He explained various types of NCD and
allowed the participants to ask questions, which he responded later.
On the
3rd day the first session was on ‘Camp Management in a disaster
situation.’ A Red Cross resource person conducted this session using group work
with the participating youth members. A brief discussion on program planning in
disaster mitigation at village level was then conducted by Laksiri for future
activity implementation at village level. Members of the youth shared their
views in the brief evaluation, that program was useful as they had the
opportunity to participate in practical demonstrations, The program was
concluded after lunch.
