Assert People’s Sovereignty
A
three-day workshop jointly organized by Pan Asia Pacific (PANAP) and National
Fisheries Solidarity Movement on ‘Asserting People’s Sovereignty’ was held at
The Kings Bay hotel in Negombo, Sri Lanka from the 25th – 27th
August 2019.
About 35
participants representing Negombo, Galle, Mathara, Polonnaruwa, Ampara, Jaffna,
Mulathive, Manner, Kilinochchi, Trincomalee and Kurunagala participated for the
workshop.
One of the
participants highlighted the idea that “This topic is common to everyone
irrespective of gender, ethnic and religious differences and it’s a timely
important topic to each and every one of us.”

A descriptive
presentation of human rights, individual rights, collective rights and common
rights were discussed at the beginning of the workshop. It was also discussed
how to bring this theme forward and ways to maintain such rights was also
discussed. Local and international mechanism that can protect the fundamental
rights and human rights was discussed.
How to
develop a social movement to protect and maintain human rights, taking actions
to upgrade human rights and rights of living and to obtain proposals to develop
future plan was also discussed
